Tanjung Priok Port Reaches 23rd Position Worldwide: A New Boost for National Logistics Development

22 July 2024

Jakarta, June 12, 2024  – Tanjung Priok Port has once again made a remarkable achievement by securing the 23rd position in the global container port rankings according to the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023, released by the World Bank Group in collaboration with S&P Global Market Intelligence. This achievement is particularly impressive considering that in 2022, the port was ranked 281st. With this significant leap, Tanjung Priok Port is now the third-ranked port in ASEAN, just behind Tanjung Pelepas Port in Malaysia and Singapore Port.

Appreciation from Supply Chain Indonesia

The Founder and CEO of Supply Chain Indonesia (SCI), Setijadi, appreciated this achievement. He emphasized the importance of comparing the performance of container ports globally to encourage the improvement of national port performance. According to him, this will affect overall logistics performance by increasing time and cost efficiency of shipping, as well as reducing uncertainty and disruptions in the supply chain.

The Key Role of Ports in Global Trade

More than 80 percent of global trade volume is transported by sea, and more than 60 percent of this is shipped using containers. Therefore, the performance of container ports greatly influences the competitiveness of products and commodities in the global supply chain. Efficient ports can help expedite the shipping process, reduce costs, and enhance logistics reliability.

Comparison with Other Major Ports in Indonesia

In addition to Tanjung Priok, the CPPI 2023 report also noted the rankings of several other major ports in Indonesia. Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya was ranked 101st, Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang was ranked 150th, and Belawan Port in Medan was ranked 308th. These rankings indicate that while there has been improvement, there is still ample room for further enhancement of these ports.

In efforts to increase national logistics efficiency, has played an active role in supporting operations at Tanjung Priok Port. As one of the leading logistics companies in Indonesia, has undertaken various initiatives to ensure smooth and efficient processes for shipping and distributing goods.

Role in Enhancing Port Efficiency

  1. Technology Integration: implements a technology-based logistics management system integrated with port infrastructure. This enables real-time monitoring of container movements and more effective inventory management.

  2. Supply Chain Optimization: With its extensive experience and network, helps optimize the supply chain from shipment, storage, to final distribution. This reduces waiting times and overall logistics costs.

  3. Strategic Partnerships: collaborates with various parties, including port authorities and transportation companies, to create integrated and sustainable logistics solutions. This includes infrastructure development and improving human resource capabilities in the logistics sector.

Recommendations from Supply Chain Indonesia

SCI has made several recommendations to further enhance national logistics efficiency. Key points include:

  1. Infrastructure Improvement: Accelerating the development and modernization of port infrastructure to accommodate increased container volumes.

  2. Process Digitalization: Implementing digital technology to expedite administrative and operational processes at ports.

  3. Human Resource Training: Increasing the capacity and skills of port workers to operate modern equipment and manage logistics processes more efficiently.

  4. International Collaboration: Establishing partnerships with international ports to share knowledge and best practices in port management.

Although this achievement is good news, challenges remain. Competition with other ports in the ASEAN region, changes in international regulations, and global economic fluctuations are some factors that need to be anticipated. However, by continually improving and innovating, Tanjung Priok Port and other ports in Indonesia have significant opportunities to enhance their competitiveness and contribute more significantly to the national economy.

The rise in Tanjung Priok Port’s ranking in the global container port index is concrete evidence of ongoing improvement efforts. With support from and recommendations from Supply Chain Indonesia, it is hoped that national logistics efficiency will continue to improve, thereby supporting Indonesia's economic growth and trade on the global stage.
